I remember in the late 40s and early 50s Purina (Agricultural Feed Company and also dog and cat food in bulk bags) painted the roofs and outside barn walls in the red and white checkerboard livery.
Village's, towns and cities had their names on their water towers along with railroad stations.

No need for GPS, VORs ETC.
