Catapults are for kids !

Hi all,

I thought I had already posted this on this forum, but maybe it's just me getting old

Recently I saw a video from the new Chinese aircraft carrier, which is in fact an old Russian aircraft carrier that was bought, restored and modernized by China.
The video features some J-15 takeoffs which are very impressive. The J-15 is a Chinese version of the Sukhoi Su-33. The impressive thing is: they don't use any catapults. Instead, there are some articulated chocks in front of the main gears, blocking the aircraft. These chocks then disappear and the aircraft takes off using the raw power of the engines and the ramp in the front of the carrier.
See here:

Of course, after seeing this, I wanted to try it in the simulator, just to compare. And I managed to get an excellent experience out of it :)
Here are the things I used:
- P3D v3 (or FSX Acceleration, would be the same)
- AICarriers 2 (freeware, to place and control any aircraft carrier anywhere)
- Bear Studios J-15, a payware package including the J-15, the Su-33 and the Chinese aicraft carrier which is seen on the video above.

The main thing to get an exact same experience as real life Chinese pilots is NOT to use the FSX/P3D catapult command. Instead, you should only use the key combination that attach the aircraft to the catapult, then use it again to detach from the cataputl (instead of triggering it). When attaching the plane to the catapult (by pressing SHIFT+I), the chocks appear and the jet blast door raises, just like on the Nimitz for example. Here is how it looks like in the sim:

And here is what you see from the cockpit. The runway is short, VERY SHORT ! :o

From there, it's easy: full throttle, stick backwards, check flaps down, and press SHIFT+I to detach from the catapult and thus disable the chocks.... and away it goes !

And no, despite the low speed on takeoff, I didn't end up in the water

Fantastic, Daube. Thanks.

It's interesting that the Chinese aircraft were yellow.

Velly intelesting. Did you notice the commentator had a distinct Vancouver accent?

They have really studied the US Navy Flight Deck Ops procedures. The color coding for their vests/helmets are even the same or damn close to it. The only big difference is their launch mechanism. I sure hope the Pentagon "higher-ups" are taking a serious notice of this stuff.

I think the yellow color is just for the prototypes or test aircrafts. Like, temporary. That repaint is part of the Bear Studios package too. In fact, I should have used it to make my screenshots closer to the video :)

It was just to make the plane look more aggressive ;)
Also, I was hoping the ordnance weight would make the takeoff even more challenging.
Sadly, there is no load manager, you have to choose one of the three-four preloaded variants. The SEAD or anti-ship one looks quite nice as well :)

You mean that, that isn't the official Yellow Peril paint job?

Really great screenshots as always Daube.
Ever since looking at these I've been practising carrier landings almost non stop !
Something I'd never tried in Flight Simming before. :)

It tends to be addictive :)
But also frustrating a bit. The thing is, one has to install many things in order to get a decent experience in FSX:
- the alternative aicraft carrier packages, payware or freeware, to replace the ugly default aicraft carriers
- AICarriers2 (I recommend the version which works with .NET instead of the original Java version)
- carrier-capable airplanes, which are difficult to find with good quality (often the hook is not defined correctly, leading to bad behavior on landings)
And then you have to learn the correct techniques to land there... but this is the fun part ;)

Ah I see :D
Coincidence I suppose. After all, the unpainted F-22 (and other aircrafts) have the same color. This is a kind of "primer" paint, something like that ;)
