I Could Resist No Longer......

The other day I was talking with a co-worker about wildfire fighting and it turned out that he was on a helitack crew in the 70s and often got to ride in a Bell 47. Naturally, the pilot was a former UH-1 driver in Vietnam, so there were a few pretty good stories about doin' things that maybe they shouldn't have been doing in that little helicopter  Even more recently Flying Trucker and I were talking about the 47 and I just couldn't resist any longer

The Bell 47 is a two-bladed, single engine, light helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter. The Bell 47 became the first helicopter certified for civilian use on March 8 1946. The bell G 2 uses the 47GLycoming O-435 / 190HP as the H-13 is 195HP. The Bell 47 helicopter entered U.S. military service in late 1946 and was designated the H-13 Sioux by the United States Army. It has also served as the helicopter of choice for basic helicopter flight instruction in many countries. NASA had a number of Bell 47s during the Apollo program, used by astronauts as trainers for the Lunar Lander.

Thanks for those Links Chuck...great detail.

Was just wondering.

Can you think of any other aircraft that had that bubble style canopy prior to or after the design of the Bell 47?

HMMM...Perhaps I can stump those Old Retired Rocking Chair Flying Geezers at the Bugsmasher Club with that question....
