Oh, no! Not again!

Postby aussiewannabe » Fri Jun 26, 2009 5:41 pm

As if a trip flying 10,090nm wasn't enough, how about this one:

Hong Kong to London Heathrow, via Midway Island, LAX, JFK non-stop.

I've set up 4 flights. Within a mile of flying over Midway Island, LAX, and JFK, I'll call up the next flight and click no to setting the AC at the starting point. It will still be in the air at the same altitude and will vector to the next destination.

I won't be able to recreate the 777 record run exactly in terms of time or nautical miles, but I've set up the known waypoints (?) it flew over. The trip is estimated to last an additional 2 hours but just only 180nm past the record.

Estimated time: 24hrs, 23 min.
Distance to be traveled: 11,836.7nm (13609.9 miles)
Yep, this 777 has the range for it.

Meanwhile enjoy some shots:

Having left Hong Hong shortly before 10:00pm, I encounter this sunrise about 1,000nm from Midway Island.

I would love to do a flight like that. Sunrise and sunset in the same flight would be gorgeous.

Great shots. I adore long hauls (when I feel like it), but ultra-long-hauls.. well, I get incredibly bored if I don't let it fly overnight.

Very nice shots! Is there a limit on the hours a pilot can fly an airliner? Would they have to have two sets of pilots for relief?

Is there a limit on the hours a pilot can fly an airliner? Would they have to have two sets of pilots for relief?

Here's what I know about the original record flight (December 10, 2005): Aboard the 777-200LR were eight pilots including Suzanne Darcy-Henneman, Boeing's first woman test pilot.

In terms of hours flown:
"These are scheduling limitations, not actual limits. An air carrier is prohibited from scheduling a pilot to fly in excess of these limits. These limits are set forth in FAR 121.471(a) and apply to all domestically scheduled air carriers operating aircraft having more than 30 seats and 7,500 pounds of payload capacity.

FAR 121.471(a) reads:

No certificate holder conducting domestic operations may schedule any flight crewmember and no flight crewmember may accept an assignment for flight time in scheduled air transportation or in other commercial flying if that crewmember
