BOAC.......again! For the final time!

Postby todayshorse » Sun Jun 29, 2008 2:54 am

Ok, shes about complete! I had to totaly re-do her again as i mistakenly saved the fuselage PSD's as flattend images and lost all the layers - and i wanted to try the photoreal textures ndude sent me!

However it gave me chance to redo some things i thought were not quite right, ive darkend the blue, made the window line wider, added the emergency escape thingys down the fuselage, re done the belly - ableit not with the photoreal, as i just couldnt get it right, no matter what i did it looked 'stretched' when i tried to blend it into the fuselage, or just wrong when i used the tool thing that replicates things.....

Re-did the BOAC lettering on the fuselage, coloured it correctly (its not black!) changed the 'boeing 747' bit as it was a little vague, and repainted the wing box/root a lighter grey and sat it on top of the original, then used about 60% opacity for a more 'real' look....

Im really chuffed with this :D, and will be uploading it somewhere later when ive figured the CLS livery manager thing :(

So no more BOAC shots! Hooray your all saying!!! Well might be some more.... ;D

Ive even joined the CLS forums because they like you to upload it there as well(for some reason), though im not really a fan of joining developers boards, they seem full of everyone saying 'thats great! - we love you so much! - come round and have tea because we think your so cool!!' to every little thing the developer posts.......i guess others dont feel that way but thats just me i guess ;D

However im all for critique, if you see somthing  that looks not quite right please tell me, im my own worst critic when it comes to stuff like this and im a stickler for detail - so tell me please!

Anyway, check it.....

Cheers! I would have loved to have got the photoreal working, im just not good enough at blending stuff like that in so it looks real - maybe ill send ndude the fuselage psd and he can show me how its done! It would look quite somthing i think!

But with a base weathered belly (i used photos of the first 747 for the detail) and much playing with the alpha, i think i got it nearly right, it strikes a good balance between the 'shine' and the weathering thats underneath, and its lost the 'fake chrome' look that i initaly got.

I do like the way you can sort of 'see through' the shine which was the effect i was after - although it sometimes shows an odd bright line round the edge of the fuselage depending on the light.

I know the real things when they come out of the factory have an almost mirror finish, but i think that effect is only possible with the photoreal, and i do like a bit of 'weathering' to give the aircraft some life!

LOL yeah i thought about that - im going to try your textures on the SCA 747, see how they work, then look at the CLS ones, as they are laid out completley differently - although id be keeping the white nacelles on the BOAC, the other bits will come in handy....and the nacelles on yours will come in handy to try on my other ongoing 747 projects, If i use ill certainly give you credit in the readme's if thats ok!

how did they map it? i have yet to see what those textures are like.never mind i saw it. everything is on the tail it looks like. very interesting.

That's fine, i could care less if you do. I'm just trying to help out ;)

Edit: if you want to have a go yourself here is the picture that i used

Thanks Mr Jake!

Ndude, i have actualy managed to use some of the textures on these engines, actualy im quite pleased with how it looks, considering the balls up i made of using similar textures on the BOAC belly!!! Not identical, but im looking forward to seeing what they look like in fs9..

That photo is superb of the engine, but as its angled and so on im not quite confident id get it looking right somehow just yet!

Heres a sneaky peeky preview, of G-HUGE's engines with ndudes textures, unusual it seems as the other Bcal 742's are on pratt and whitneys.....great reg number though!!! Wonder where she is now?

Yeah i had a look on airliners.net for her, seems she was last seen with atlas air in 2004 - not bad! And shes a freighter now as well.

Caledonian didnt seem to have her for long, she was jordanian in 1986, Bcal 1987, gone in as you say, 1990! I guess she didnt fit in with British Airways plans....maybe cos of those lovely shiney engines!
