Tour of the Pacific Coast - part 5: Volcanoes!

continued from part 4

Flying over Nazan Bay at Atka. In the background you can see Atka City, located on the east side of the island.
Right above the fuselage of my gorgeous Beechcraft D18S you can see Atka Airport [url=http://www.airnav.com/airport/PAAK
](PAAK)[/url]

Atka is a pretty large island for Aleutian standards, while at the 2000 census the population was only 92!.

Below is the Herbert Volcano while in the distance you can see the notorious Mount Cleveland on the right (scenery here)
and Carlisle Island to the left. All seems quite quiet ...

BANK LEFT!! BANK LEFT!!

I shouted to myself in fear! I could not believe my eyes; right in front of me a big cloud of smoke and ash exploded from Mount Cleveland.
I pulled my stick hard left and hit full throttle to evade the danger in front of me.

Image

Lucky I did not get caught in hot smoke or ashes! It seemed to be only a minor eruption and my baby did not sustain any damage.

Image

Moving away from these dangerous volcanoes I turned by plane towards Umnak Island, the third largest island in the Aleutians.
Down below is Nikolski Air Station (PAKO) and the DEW (Distant Early Warning) Line Station (scenery here & here).

The city supporting the Air Station; Nikolski (population of 39) is the only remaining community on the island.

I quickly forgot my horrible volcanic encounter as soon as I saw these scenic images ... that is what I came here for!

I hope you liked my report of the tour and the shots that go with them so far.
If you have any tips or feel that I need to go and see something while I'm in the area, please share your feedback!

Thanks for looking and stay tuned for the next part!

Beautiful again, but even more so! Love the eruption  :o

Where's the scenery from?

You asked for tips:

1. this is part 5  ;)
2. Maybe it's just me, but I like to vary the planes I use. Maybe at least different repaints.... looking at the same bird for 50 posts could get less interesting after a while. But that's just my opinion and the quality of the shots, scenery and information together makes for one of the best tour series I've seen!

Thanks K! I appreciate the feedback and I adjusted the title too.

I'm still deciding about the plane but to give a little hint: a version with floats will also be in the tour.
And for the really nice mountains in Alaska I'm considering a Cub although I have not yet decided on a variant ...

But one thing is for sure: they'll have to fit the story and I like to come up with something creative for switching planes.

The eruption scenery is in the post but here it is again  ;)

Best set so far Harold!! Outstanding, you've really researched the area well & the shots are awsome.

As for changing the plane, i'm in the same school of thinking as you regarding that, When I flew from hanks to the Caribbean I used the Goose all the way down to the tip of the Florida Keys & I had to have a reason to change planes, I couldn't change planes for the h3ll of it. In the end I had to deliver a Fokker DR1, but the Goose still made it all the way to Caribbean. 8-)

As for using the Cub, have you thought about the excellent freeware Maule package that is available?

Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

TSC.
