Tour of the Pacific Coast - part 4: More Aleutians

continued from part 3

I'm taking small steps and I'll share the shots in small increments ... I hope you enjoy them.

Here I'm leaving Gareloi Island behind me. Gareloi is just a few miles north from the deserted airfiled in part 3.
Gareloi is one of the many volcanic islands in the Aleutians but did you know it averaged over 1000 (small) earthquakes last year?!!

Another 30 miles eastward lies Tanaga Island. I need my sunglasses ...

Nice little farm on Kanaga ... too bad the don't have a landing strip down there. Here I'm saying "Hello!" in aviation style ;)

Image

Fly-by at Adak Airfield; ATC was not amused. My altitude was OK so I wonder what it was ... could be the noise.

Image

Saying 'HI' to the guys down at the Seaplane Base, which is home to the Adak Bait & Tackle, Roosters Bar & Grill and the Quick Chat Cafe.
The pilots seem to be very busy today; none of the seaplanes were at the dock.

Interesting that the bait and tackle shop is open way more hours than the restaurant. I wonder if there is a grocery store ...
Or perhaps not, which is why the bait and tackle shop is open so long - you'll probably have to catch your meal!

In the last image of today I'm passing over Sand Bay at Great Sitkin Island, which is also a sleeping volcano.
Interesting detail is that it had it's last eruption on my fourteenth birthday ...

Below you can see the oil drum storage area which is highly contaminated ... sad but true.

stay tuned for part five!

Very enjoyable, if you keep up this level of detail it will be a great read. This stretch along the Aleutians was exactly what I was planning to do a year ago before my computer collapsed and I ran out of energy..... shots are very nice too.

Stunning series, I can't wait for the rest. Are you planning on flying the entire stretch with that plane?
