I believe I never saw before such a glass nose on a civil plane.

Russians used them quite a bit on their civil aviation planes and I think that was because was so they could pull double duty as military transport planes...but don't ask me why they needed the glass nose.

Thanks for the replies.

Here are a few more from this flight that you might like.

This is Fs9 by the way.

I would suspect that there were many reasons that the Russian planes continued with the glass nose which appear on many of the Russian planes both military and non.

1) the Russians suffered greatly during WWII when they ran short of military supplies and continued a tradition of having each plane be capable of easy conversion to military multi-purpose use.

2) a lack of high level avionics radar etc.............. and the need to have the possibility of visual reference at the time that this plane was developed.

But these ae just guesses.

For the first set, the last one is the best IMHO. And for the second set, I'd say the 3rd one. Very nice shots, all of them!

Excellent shots again Ramsa...I'm loving that plane more and more.

And what you said about the glass noses...I've been thinking along the same lines.  :)

It wasn't so they could be converted to military transports. It was so they could be converted to bombers. The glass nose would house the bombardier, and would be used for targeting.
