Megascenery for Dread Pirate Roberts

As per the request of Dread Pirate I am posting these shots of scenery from Megascenery No. Cal.

I want to apologize for the quality as these are intended to possibly help Dread and others with vfr photographic scenery issues rather than be art shots.

These are all taken in fairly clear weather at midday  for the purpose of acting as an example.

The most important point is that even with extended textures turned off that there are no gaps of blurred textures within the scenery.

In this shot the far shoreline can be seen clearly and even though the terrain is flat details can be seen in all the areas
Image

The depth of the cuts and the trees and bushes in megasceenery are very strong and again even though extended textures are turned off the mountains to the rear still contain detail
Image

This is a shot showing how FSUIPC can create closer horizons which elimante the problem of mid-range blurries
Image

When set-up correctly Megascenery No. Cal. will add layers fater than the stock autogen can load. The autogen rate can be adjusted by using different settings within Fs9.cfg
Image

Finally a shot which shows that even detail in the far left corner can still be seen
Image

My suggestions are as follows:

1) copy and save your fs9.cfg file as a back-up.

2) run the utility that comes with Megascenery and allow it to reset your fs9.cfg. Use a tool called Fsconfigurator to easily adjust your .cfg settings

3) adjust your anti-aliasing and anisotropic filter in the cards control panel to the maximum that your card can handle.

4) try to keep your sliders within the sim at the maximum settings that you can. Megascenery can be easier on frame rates than stock scenery

Michael, thanks for the help.  I see what you mean about missing textures now.  Now I need to figure out what to adjust.  Where do you find that FS Configurator?  I don't use FSUIPC, so I don't know how much that'll affect my setup.

Fs9Configurator is a program by Ken Salter and can be found on AVSIM.

When you run the app that comes with Megascenery it will configure or I should say reconfigure your fs9.cfg file.

That's why if you are happy with your .cfg file as it is now for other sceneries you should back it up.

You can than use Fs9configurator to reset the numbers when you are flying in an area outside Megascenery.

FSUIPC is a program that every simmer should have in his sim. If you have questions about it I'll help you.

It's payware but very cheap and absolutely essential:

your problem is a FS setting problem.  I would suspect the "global texture" setting.  It will have pretty negative impacts on textures when set low.

Ramsa, I don't seem to find any tools for adjusting the cfg file, unless it's the one that's for updating the scenery library.

Can you point me in the right direction for how to use that FS9 Configurator?  I'm not sure how to adjust the settings.

Thanks!

I seem to have gotten it a bit, but I think it could be better.

that last shot looks like the textures haven't loaded fully. In the others, I guess you were over the area you had started out from, if you fly too fast (or have settings too high) the scenery can't load fast enough and you get the blurry textures which are meant to be for the distance textures. You have to try and find a balance between texture loading and display settings.

Dread,

I usually don't like posting settings or giving out "helpful hints" without knowing as much as possible about your set-up but in this case i'll try to help you out a bit.

The file that you want to have is a utility called Fs9Configurator by Ken Salter.

Do a search under Fs2004 utilities for the name Ken Salter and you'll find it.

Once you have it installed in the default location than start it.

In order to reset it you will need to right click on the parameter that you want to change and than choose change key.

Insert the change that you want and save.

There are different settings within the .cfg file that control the way textures load.

This is what your .cfg file looks like when you have run the utility that comes with Megascenery. If yours doesn't look exactly like this than it should. You will notice that in this shot terrain extended textures are turned off as they would be with photoreal scenery but not with other sceneries
Image

There is a connection between PAN_RATE in controls and Texture_Bandwidth_Mult in display. Try to find a balance between the numbers. What you see here is the perfect balance for my machine and may not be the best for you.

Pan_Rate should not be more than 900 and Texture _ Bandwidth_Mult should be adjusted in increments of 60 and should not exceed 400
Image

Image

When these two elements are balanced you should achieve a faster load of the tiles but be aware that the settings within Texture_Bandwidth_Mult will affect your FPS.

Megascenery No Cal loads a great deal faster than So Cal

Turn off AA within the sim.

Try to find a balance in your video card which you should generally speaking have at 4x AA and 8x anisotropic filtering for ATI and 2x and 4x for older Nvidia cards.

Vertical sync should be set to application preference.

This of course depends a great deal on the card and the drivers but these are good general rules.

Install a full registered version of FSUIPC because when you have turned off extended terrain you will want to adjust sight distance so that you can control the blurries.
