36 cylinder formation

Postby Mitch. » Sun Apr 26, 2009 10:18 pm

Arguably, 3 of the best WWII piston engined fighters ever produced:

North American P-51 Mustang-Considered to be the best US fighter at the time, the first Mustangs were powered by Allison engines. By late 1942 the Mustang airframe was fitted with the proven Rolls-Royce Merlin. The P-51D was produced in greater numbers than other models with total production of 15,586 with at least 55 different Air Forces.

Supermariane Mk IX Spitfire-The Spitfire is one of the most famous combat aircraft during World War 2. It entered service with the RAF in August 1938. When the Mk IX was introduced in June 1942 it offered a much needed conter to the Focke Wolf 190. It went on to equip RAF and the RAAF armed forces.

Curtiss P-40 Warhawk-The P-40 was a great success for Curtiss, derived from the P-36 Hawk it featured an Allison liquid-cooled V-12 over the P-36s Wright Cyclone radial. Its first flight was in October of 1938 and total production exceeded 16,000.

These 3 aircraft were at one stage all registered in Australia but the P-40 later left for France. The Spitfire and Mustang are still here in Australia and perform regularly at airshows. Here are these magnificent aircraft flying together in loose formation around Launceston (YMLT). Enjoy...

Thanks for the comments, glad you liked them. This set is officially my last screenshots on my old system. And I'm proud of her, she served me well for the last 2-3 years. But times are changing though, need to keep up with technology. RIP old system. :'(

You know, I was highly considering that. ;D
