Testing ...

Postby Harold » Tue Feb 26, 2008 7:40 pm

Hi All,

Tonight I did the first real flight to test my new install. It's running surprisingly smooth even over Alaska Cinematic.
I did a couple of tests with some heavy 3D clouds and I think the results are already pretty nice.

The aircraft is the float version of Brian Gladden's Noorduyn Norseman. A fantastic aircraft for all of you who like bush flying!

I wish MS did a better job rendering glaciers/ice fields in FS then the flat white areas they did. (See http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1203901146) I have a question would you say this scenery is better than GEX, because I'm looking for scenery that covers all of Alaska and I don't really know which is best for FSX :-/

Hi Harold

Good to see you back in the air. Looking pretty nice. The clouds look great. You didn't say what sim you are using. Can't tell with that scenery. I'm guessing it's FS2004 still. Nice looking aircraft livery.

would you say this scenery is better than GEX, because I'm looking for scenery that covers all of Alaska and I don't really know which is best for FSX.

Although I don't run FSX I know that Dave has successfully installed Alaska Cinematic in his FSX. In my sim I prefer Alaska Cinematic over Ground Environment but please keep in mind that Alaska Cinematic only covers a small part of Alaska; both parts roughly cover the area between Anchorage and Kenai. Check the Georender website to see the details.

I haven't come across a package that covers the whole of Alaska and I've seen a lot of them! I have about 400 scenery addons for Alaska so I think I know what I am talking about ...

And your photographs are gorgeous! I think that it will - unfortunately - take quite some time before Flight Simulator reaches those levels of realism. But if you enjoy Alaskan shots like that take a look at Shaun Lunt's weblog. He flew in a Cub over Alaska for three months!!

Second one is a beauty Harold, is now my desktop background.

Thanks for the honor of being your desktop background. I've zipped all 17 bitmaps from that series and put them on my webserver. You can get them here (42MB)

Thank you Bob! As you know I put a lot of time and effort into my sim and I must say I am really pleased with the results. It is a good thing that I wrote down some of the FS-GS tips and tricks else I would probably not have such a smooth sim. So partial credit goes to Michael Greenblatt too. But Alaska Cinematic is stunning scenery. Even Ultimate Terrain and Ground Environment do not produce such sweet graphics; but that's the benefit of photoreal. I like it and I know you do too ... but some might not.

The skies are Flight Environment and the weather theme is Hot and Humid for the last three and the default fair weather in the first.

And you're right ... it is FS2004. FSX just doesn't run smooth enough on this machine.

The master returns.

Oh dear ... I'm considered a master. Thank you JK, that is too nice but really too much honor for me. Your screenshots are just as good and the repaints that you make are just mindblowing! I couldn't do that even if my life depended on it ...

Good to see you back up & running again Harold, looking forward to the rest of the tour.

Where were we last? Last thing I recall was getting tipsy in Yakutat.[smiley=evil.gif]

Cheers,
