"Freedom 7"

Mercury-Redstone 3 was NASA's first manned space mission. On May 5, 1961 the launch of the Mercury-Redstone 3 with the Mercury capsule named "Freedom 7" Blasted into suborbital flight with the pilot Alan B. Shepard Jr being the first American man into space. The flight only lasted 16 minutes and reached an altitude of 187kms but it started Americas push into the space race. This was the first of 2 flights Alan Shepard made, the last one being Apollo 14.
