Obelix! Noooooooo!!

;D

I've been on holiday.... and I decided to make something a little different. This picture took absolutely bloody ages to make but I learned a lot about PS and I'm quite happy with the result so - 12 hours well spent.

Here's a 'how I did it' for anyone who's interested.

1. Freehand pencil sketch on paper, photographed and uploaded into my comp. I was was pleasantly surprised to find I could draw quite a good likeness, though there are errors, differences of course.

Image

2. Lineart painstakingly placed over the top of the drawing using the vector pen tool - finally I've learned how to use it! It's great!

Image

3. Coloured it in using a photo of the original pic so the colours are more or less as they should be. I found colouring using the mouse very difficult, so decided to use the paint tool. Unfortunately, the lineart style I used in part 2, with simulate pen pressure, of course left tons of gaps.... which I painstakingly again had to spend ages filling up with thin lines. I also added some bits I'd missed when drawing, like the sword.

4. Put Asterix on a background.

5. Did some colouring, darkening and lightening, added a gradient somewhat like in the original pic, nothing too noticeable - I wanted it to look as close to the original as possible, with a bit of extra juice...

Image

Finally, made the text using Impact and warped it - looks fairly like the original text, which is hand drawn I think. Put it in a speech bubble, selected and layer masked Asterix so it's behind him, made a couple of small colour adjustments and added a bit of noise. Finished.

Wow, this is very, very good! And really refreshing too! :)

Do you work in graphic arts, or planning on seeking a job in the field?
Either way, I see success here. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

:D Cheers mate!

I'm just training myself to use PS properly via various projects.... but I'd like eventually to find a way of making money out of illustration so I don't have to spend so much of my free time correcting translations about concrete, dams, stochastic analysis and other thrilling stuff...

...but learning the skillz and copying other people's work is one thing, creating something new takes talent and I'm almost afraid that I'll get to the end of all this training and find I don't have any... :-/ :'(........ ;D

Cheers

OMG someone actually responded  :o  ;D

Thanks guys, glad you liked it  :)  Working for Disney or better Pixar would be cool... but I think a bit out of my league. I couldn't cope with the stress those guys must work under anyway.

Skoker, Asterix comics were made mainly in the 60s and 70s and, along with Tintin, I grew up on them. They're published in many languages and are still popular today though I doubt theyappeal quite as much to kids who grow up on today's dark, morbid, gory stuff.

Oh, I don't know. I heard only the other day that they're bringing Tintin to the big screen. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5g0XW_pCa_3U02TGgNYbQytsawCFQ

Have a cookie Meck!! I hope you have them enabled... this was my first attempt and I had to learn new stuff, make and correct mistakes etc. So I'd be quicker the second time, but I want to do something different again for my next project - trying to finally get a global overview of what PS can do...

Hagar, that's excellent news!! Tintin rocks..... and I hope kids ARE still into Asterix and Tintin...

...but I'd be interested to see the ratio of young'uns to older folks in the cinema. :)
