ME262 is the first operational jet plane. Anything before that are prototypes.

And another one: the DH Comet 1 isnt the first commercially operated jetliner... it was still in the acceptance phase with BOAC when it crashed. The Tu-104A was the first commercially operated jetliner

Er, yep. The 178 was followed by the British Gloster E.28/39 a year before the Me262.

Having said that, the first Me262 did fly a month before the Gloster E.28/39, but that's irrelevant. ;) (cryptic question in there)

The Me262 went into service just before the (more operationally sustainable) Gloster Meteor. :)

Is that the the same TU-104 that entered Aeroflot service in 1956, four years after BOAC recieved the Comet and had operated it commercially (and had the several accidents - with more than one airline too). :P

Probably the best looking of the first generation jets. :) Nicer than the portly British Gloster, or the "very American" (built like a tank, and designed like a Cadillac) P-59. :)

Ugh, the p-59 is ugly. But, i love the P-39. Any idea where i can get one of those?

Wasn't the HE-178 a copy of the model that was originally designed by Frank Whittle?

To the best of my knowledge it was a completely separate development. Whittle designed engines not airframes.

The Heinkel He 178 first flew on 27th August 1939. This was before the specification for an airframe to test Whittle's engines in had been issued by the British Air Ministry in September 1939.. The result was the Gloster E.28/39 which was the first British aircraft to fly powered by a jet engine. It first flew on 15th May 1941. http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/allies/gb/cleaverwhittlepreview.htm

I can empathize with that... ;)

There seem to be as many different definitions of first jet aircraft as there were first-generation jets...first started, first completed, first to fly, first operational etc... :-?
