Umm, how bout this one:

The A380 is real, the 700 doesn't exist (and never will)

Boeing is not making a double decker, or at least not for 20 years.  The 787 is the next new plane in the pipeline, followed by the 747-8 series, then a replacement for the 737 is/will be in the works to be delivered after the first 747-8.

According to the SimV ticker tape news, a Boeing article reported that there are no plans short or long term to replace the 737 with anything.

I read that they had only delayed it.

They many not have any plans NOW, but chances are they will 'replace' it with something eventually.  It may be completely different, but will likely serve the same purpose-a short to mid range medium capacity airliner.

Hehe, who knows, by the time they do anything with the 737 I might be heading up the project ;D

I thought the 787 was supposed to fill the niche of the 737 as the economical workhorse of the fleet.

Naw.  I mean maybe in the words you used, economically I don't think it was intended too but it's making its way there, I mean it's reached nearly 900 orders and one hasn't even flown yet.  But as far as performance goes it's more of a 757/767 replacer.
