What is a better plane: Il-96 or A340?
Which has a bigger orderbook: A340-300 or Il-96-400?
Can A340 be described as a French copy of Il-96?

They look similar, but they are based on entirely different aircraft - for example, the A340 is (loosley) based of the A300 and the IL96 is based from the IL86, both of which were made for entirely diferant duties AND look completely diferant - therefore, they cannot be copies of eachother. If they were, it would be like saying the A350 is a 'french copy' of the 777, 767 is a copy of the A300, A330 is a copy of the 767... and so on - which is rediculous. The aircraft only look similar, but that's when the similarities end.
A340 has a bigger order book. Based on orders then I would say the A340 is most likely a better plane. However, if Douglas didn't mess up early MD-11s, it could of been possible for the MD-11 to of outsold the A340.

Also the A340 is made up of a couple of million parts. The IL96 has been carved from one bit of metal and no two will be the same

Airbus says that there are just 3 orders for A340-300

There are three longhaul planes with rather similar length and MTOW: B777-200ER with 2 engines, A340-300 with 4 engines and MD-11 with 3 engines.
And Il-96-400 is close to these three.
Which of them is best?

That is a question for the companies that choose the aircraft they want to operate. They will take into account many things, basic aircraft cost, operating costs to mention a couple. For us to say what is best, it would be an ill informed answer.

Only if you're counting orders for a single month.
Second, google is your friend.

Depends on what the costomer is looking for. 777 is selling the best though.
And Il-96-400 is close to these three.
But it falls waaay short from A340E, A340NG, and 777ER range.

For the Il96
Wikipedia says 27 active, 34 on order as of march 2008 for all variants
That doesnt include the options (Iran Air and Conviasa)
As soon as ILF and krasair stop quarreling about the lease costs (the 2 KrasAir aircraft, not the ones of Domodedovo), Iran Air finally gets their 2 machines for route testing. And Airtours is getting Tu-204s byu the way...

No, grand total.
There are 3 orders for A340-200 and A340-300 combined. A340-200 has no orders, it is out of production. So the three orders of A340-300 are 2 frames for Finnair and one for a private person. That is all.
Il-96-400 seems to have more.

That's incorrect. A340-300 orders have grand totalled well over two hundred aircraft, most of which have been delivered. Aircraft ON order (that haven't been delivered yet) is probably what you're referring to.
The IL96 has got only a fraction of the A340 in grand total orders and number built, but still has a fair bit of aircraft that are yet to be deleivered. About 30 if I'm not mistaken.
