The first American manned flight of an aircraft propelled by rocket thrust alone was made by Boushey on August 23, 1941.

In an Ercoupe of all things. Amazing. :o Woohoooo.........! ;)

I know, I was expecting the first rocket flight to be in some rocket-only airplane, at least something with an ejection seat. But a Ercoupe isn't exactly a standard military test plane. Hilarious nevertheless. ;)

Nor is the massive Aerospacelines Pregnant Guppy, which was also used in JATO/RATO tests...
