that I didn't know of.

It seems that a "field modification" was made to a Spit, locating a second (open) cockpit in front of the regular cockpit.

(get the latest "Aeroplane" for photos of the original and the airframe undergoing restoration.....)

I got interested when I saw this too. It turns out that Airframe Assemblies jigged together a mock-up for the article on a Mk IX they're restoring. The conclusion was that without major modifications it may have been very windy or very uncomfortable - depending on how much you wanted to duck! You lost the main fuel tank too...

Interesting article - worth a read ("Aeroplane" always is)

ES127? Of 4 Sqn, formerly of 417? The Mk V with the front fuel tanks removed and the open pit shoved in?
I'm waiting for the latest edition of Aeroplane to appear here!!!

Mark ;)

Thanks Charlie, but it should be here by the end of the week. I'll go hassle my favourite foreign magazine shop tomorrow ;)

Strangely enough I spotted this only today while browsing through "Aeroplane Monthly" in Mr. WH Smiths' (or is it Smith's?) establishment. I didn't purchase a copy though.

I'm one of those sad people who queues outside Smith's on the first day of the month to get my "Aeroplane (monthly)" and "Flypast" for my fix of historic news... ;D

I used to have Aeroplane on regular order at my friendly local newsagent. I think it was about 50 pence per copy when they introduced the new monthly format. What is it now? About
