It seems that a "field modification" was made to a Spit, locating a second (open) cockpit in front of the regular cockpit.
(get the latest "Aeroplane" for photos of the original and the airframe undergoing restoration.....)

ES127? Of 4 Sqn, formerly of 417? The Mk V with the front fuel tanks removed and the open pit shoved in?

Strangely enough I spotted this only today while browsing through "Aeroplane Monthly" in Mr. WH Smiths' (or is it Smith's?) establishment. I didn't purchase a copy though.
I'm one of those sad people who queues outside Smith's on the first day of the month to get my "Aeroplane (monthly)" and "Flypast" for my fix of historic news...
