For fans of this excellent ground-attack airplane, I highly recommend your obtaining a copy of the June 2004 issue of Aeroplane Monthly magazine.  The "Tiffie" is the airplane showcased in this  issue's "Database" series.

As usual, the articles trace the history of the airplane from prototype and development through operational service and extant examples.  Also included is an article on flying the airplane.

I just picked up my copy today but have not had time to read it all yet. Nice Spitfire center spread also. I think I'm correct in saying that there is only one Typhoon remaining.

HAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOONHAWKERTYPHOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the typhoon! dude, you know the griffon engine used in the tempest? what they could do was open the engine covers, take out the spark plugs ;D, and replace them with temporary fuses! this meant that when the engine was running, a dirty great spout of firecame out of the top of each cylinder! although dangerous ;D, it looked bloody spectacular!!! dude it rocked 8).

I think you will find that the Typhoon and Tempest had a Napier Sabre not a Rolls Royce Griffon ;) A prototype Tempest was flown with a Griffon but it was never used in production aircraft. The only other engine fitted to production Tempests was the Bristol Centaurus in the MkII.

I don't think your mate was lying completely. Although he got the type of engine wrong i'm sure i've heard of doing that trick with the spark pulgs before.
