THe "Spitfire floatplane" thread in a/c wanted got me to thinking.

Usually floatplane fighters were conversions of wheeled landplanes - Fairey Flycatcher, for example ...

Name one fighter, used in combat, that was designed from the outset as a floatplane fighter, and was more successful as a redesigned landplane.

I should know the answer to this. In fact I'm sure I did know it once. Too difficult. Life's too short to worry about it. I give up. :P ;)

Silly idea (but floatplanes aren't really my field), but was it the Fairy Swordfish?

No.  The Swordfish was designed as a wheeled torpedo attack airplane, with floats added.

The particular aircraft I'm thinking about is a WW2 fighter, designed from the outset as a floatplane single-engine fighter, and redesigned as a landplane.  In the hands of a knowledgable pilot, its four cannon armament was a potent adversary.

N1K1 "Kyofu" initially was developed as a floatplane fighter, with contrarotating props.

N1K1-J "Shiden" landplane developed, superseded by the N1K2.   Allied code-name "George".

I actually new that! I have some books of Robert Taylors paintings and there was one of them in there. The paintings  each have a detailed desciption of the planes involved and the moment in which the painting is capturing. I can't believe I knew something!

There. Now see what you've done Felix. Denied poor Bird man his moment of glory.

Next time, hold fire on that button for a while. :P ;)
