F-106

Here it is, the F-102C...oops we changed more that 60% of the airframe so we have to call it the F-106. since the 102 is the Delta Dagger, I guess we will call this one the F-106 Delta Dart.
When I was first stationed at Minot AFB, ND in 1984, this was the aircraft that was stationed there as part of the Air Defense Command (ADC). It was replaced by the F-15 in 1985. As the story goes, this aircraft pictured was damaged on a landing, and was made a static aircraft.
In Lake Sakakawea, near New Town, ND in about 50' of water lays an F-106 that crash in the lake. It is a popular site for experiance divers.
In the mid 80's the pilot of an F-106 lost control of his aircraft over upsatate New York. He safely ejected over farm land. The plane regained control of itself and "landed" in a corn field. The personel from Griffiss Air Force Base (near Rome, NY) recover the aircraft, and had it back in the air with in one month. Why?, the delta wing design.
The 106 was also used as a trainer/chase plane for the B-58 ( I might be incorrect as it might have been the F-102).
Sorry about the quality of the picture. It came from a slightly corupt floppy

The F-106 was in a program to make a normal-takeoff reusable low-budget spacecraft

It was the first practical all missile interceptor, it was capable of being flown to its target by SAGE ( semi-automatic ground environment)with little input by the pilot, latter models were fitted with an M61 Vulcan, there was an original order for 1000 but was cut to 350 after the requirment was changed. And its also my favourite of the century series (I think, maybey the F-101B)
