IN a certain manner - the concept was tried and, at least given the technology of the day, was found unworkable.

Reference - XC-120 Fairchild "Pack Cargo Carrier".

Basically, the C-119, with modified landing gear, and a large belly pod that would be slid under the main (abbreviated) central fuselage.

THe main problem was handling the pod on the ground.
