The Empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
An eldest uncle, now some while deceased, spent the last month or so of the EOT of WWII in a stalag because this day (his birthdate) brought the United States officially into WWII; on the 8th of December we declared war on Japan and, subsequently, Nazi Germany declared war on the United States.

Yet another event in history which was so unnecessary, and caused so much death and destruction in its wake.

But by getting America into the war the first step of liberating the Netherlands from Nazi-occupation was set! Still mighty thankful for what you did for us, America!!

My father used to tell me about the buzz bombs over London that he saw when he was on shore leave while getting repairs to the ship he was on. He told me about the spitfire pilots that would go up to shoot them down and when they ran out of ammo use thier wing to knock them off course
. Sounds like crazy times. It was watching them fly that gave him his desire to fly which he did latter in life. He and I spent many hours flying in the aircraft that he bought or built over the years
. He and his friends bought a piece of land which they turned into an airport that is still in service to this day. CYSH

Thanks for the response, folks...
I was surprised that I 'reminded' the first three of my relieving shift that morning. The older of them was somewhat shocked that hadn't realized it was a day, to quote him, "we forget too easily."

It is sad but true that "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it." It seems we're not ever likely to stop the madness.
BTW, just to pick a nit, the correct quote is "A date that..."

Glad that you like the airport. Depending on your age you may have even met my father while he was still an active member ( His nickname was "Tuggy"). I dont get out to the airport much any more as most of the people that I knew are gone but from the pictures off thier website I see there are still a few of the older guys left that I know. Many happy memories for me out there, was always my fathers and my favorite place to go and spend time, either flying or just hanging out. My mother still has some photos of the airport from back in the early 60's. I will go to her house and see if I can find them. If I do I will scan them and post them on Photobucket for everyone that is interested to see.

I often wonder if a Woman (female) ever started a disastrous war which results in so much death and destruction?
