I remember it like it was yesterday, on the BBC News and Television.
The awful aftermath of the upper tier of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collapsing down onto the lower tier, trapping and crushing the vehicles and their occupants!

I remember that day, I wasn't there but I've watched a lot of video. I thought it was amazing in the way some structures survived completely and some dropped like a stone.

I drove over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge a couple of years (July,1987) before the quake hit and I think it just kind of shocks you more when you can say I've been there. I don't know what it is, perhaps it's the familiarity with a place that makes you pay more attention to something like this. Kind of a freaky feeling. Anyone else ever feel that way?

The design of the old Bay Bridge, with its two roadway tiers, one positioned directly above the other, in a region suffering from frequent earthquakes, has always seemed to me like a disaster just waiting to happen....
...and then in 1989, it happened!

Finally, someone in the Transport Department woke up, and the Bridge has now been completely redesigned and strengthened.
I have been following its progress regularly via Kron4 daily news...>>>

I presume that the original two-tier design has now been abandoned.

The San Rafael-Richmond Bridge, just up-stream of San Francisco Bay, with its similar 2-tier design is a bit of a worry, and I'm keeping a close eye on it!
