I have heard, although I can't document it, that the Soviet Union would not allow excavations of Stalingrad.

The death tolls, among the highest in the war, were falsified (under reported) and the Soviets feared discovery of the real numbers.

According to Wikipedia the 5 month siege cost:

850,000 Germans (military) killed, missing or wounded
1,120,000 Soviet military killed, missing or wounded
40,000 Russian civilians dead

They were fighting, just as hard as you or I would, to remove the Germans from their native soil, not for some worthless, bombed-out city, but for their loved ones, to free them from a foreign invader. I salute their effort, but not necessarily the methods their political supperiors utilized to acheive the ends desired. Throwing unarmed or partially armed troops against an enemy, with orders t shoot them should they refuse, is not my idea of how-to, but in this case it worked. The Russian Winter once again saved the Russians from an invader on their home soil.

To the Troops, Fallen on both sides!
