June 1962 Alcatraz escape

The June 11, 1962, Alcatraz escape was an attempt by American criminals Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris to escape Alcatraz Island, one of the United States' most famous prisons. They burrowed out of their cells, climbed a ventilation shaft onto the roof and then climbed down and left the island on a makeshift raft. Despite an extensive search, the men were never heard from again and their fates remain unknown.

The 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz starred Clint Eastwood, Fred Ward, and Jack Thibeau as Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin, respectively. The film strongly implied that the three made it.

The case is still open.

I always find myself hoping they did make it as an example of the inability to break the human spirit. I particularly enjoyed the recent Mythbusters showing the errors in the film and the search by the authorities 8-)

I always remember being on holiday in San Fransisco and being given some advice by a nice waitress at our hotel "Don't swim in the Bay and don't jump off the Bridge!" ;D ;D ;D
