BBC History: Was the American Revolution Inevitable?

England managed other colonies for hundreds of years.

I would guess that many of the settlers in America came here to escape the British government in the first place, and were less than happy to discover it could still reach and rule here.  Most other colonies were made up of locals and explorers, not common people looking to escape.
