A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which was first published in 1887. It is the first story to feature the character of Sherlock Holmes, who would later become one of the most famous literary detective characters, with long-lasting interest and appeal. Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sean Connery - share Edinburgh as a birthplace.  Did I mention I was born in Edinburgh  :D.

As a huge fan to 221b Baker Street I've got no criticisms!
Has the new British series Sherlock turned up in the States yet? A modern Holmes that is gripping and then some!

Yes, the three episode first series aired several months ago.

Has a second series (what Americans would call a second season) begun to air on BBC yet?

Due in November Webb. There is a fourth unaired pilot episode which you can get with the DVD set of the series. Mine arrived from Amazon the other day so guess what I'm watching whilst having lunch ;D ;D ;D
