Two brothers who owned a bicycle shop in Ohio had some success with an aeronautical experiment...  ;D

I was reminded about 'Wright Brothers Day' when it was mentioned on BBC radio news this morning. Is it still celebrated in the US or regarded as old history?

It's not a bank holiday or anything like that, but it is marked on my EAA calendar.  ;D

Probably didn't want to take a chance at something screwing it up.  They wanted to fly the first day they could.
