A Toshiba "radio", packed in a Samsonite suitcase, loaded in the centre of a baggage container just forward of the port wing of Pan Am flight 103, 747-100 "Clipper Maid of the Seas", exploded

259 on board were killed.

11 in the Scottish town of Lockerbie were killed when the wings, loaded with fuel for the transatlantic crossing, landed in the town.

RIP.

A shocking event that I remember like yesterday. I was working in Weston-Super-Mare at the time and was staying with a lovely Scottish lady and her husband at their B&B.

Her mother lives in Lockerbie, still does, and I'll never forget the sheer panic and helplessness she felt that night until she made contact.

Terrible.

I'd only just gone through Lockerbie half an hour before, travelling back to Liverpool from Glasgow where I was living. I arrived back in Liverpool to panicking parents who thought the coach may have been caught up in it and TV coverage of the aftermath. There was additional anxiety as one of my sisters flat mates lived in Lockerbie .... and as expected it took days to contact her to make sure she was ok.

As young as I was, I still remember seeing the news about the crash on the television.  The image of the remains of the side of the fuselage laying sideways I will always remember.
