1442 - Birth of Edward IV, first English king from the House of York (1461-1470, 1471-1483).

1758 - Birth of James Monroe, 5th President of the United States of America (1817-1825).

1789 - Fletcher Christian and 1/3 of the HMS Bounty crew mutiny, setting Captain William Bligh and 18 sailors, in the Bounty's launch, afloat in the South Pacific.

1918 - Titled as the man who caused World War I, Gavrilo Princip, Bosnian (Serb) revolutionary assassin of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, dies from tuberculosis in his Austrian cell.

1919 - Founding of the League of Nations.

1945 - Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, are captured while attempting to flee Italy and executed.

1947 - To prove his theory that Peruvian Indians could have settled in Polynesia, Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl and a crew of five set out in a balsa wood craft, the Kon Tiki.

1952 - The official ending of the war with Japan was effected by a treaty that had been signed by the United States and 47 other nations.

1967 - Muhammad Ali refused induction into the U.S. Army and was stripped of his boxing title. He cited religious grounds for his refusal.
