Noted April Fool's Day events:

1621 - Leaders of the Plymouth colonists, acting on behalf of King James I, made a defensive alliance with Massasoit, chief of the Wampanoags.

1863 - The first U.S. wartime conscription law was enacted.

1918 - The Royal Air Force was established in Britain with the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).

1920 - Germany's Workers Party changed its name to the Nationalist Socialist German Worker's Party (Nazis).

But gave many more a memorable involvement for historical, rather than hysterical, anals. Each prank has its victims.

1621 - Leaders of the Plymouth colonists, acting on behalf of King James I, made a defensive alliance with Massasoit, chief of the Wampanoags.
This feindly friendly gesture turned out well for the Wampanoags (who/where are they now?).

1863 - The first U.S. wartime conscription law was enacted.
Ah, yes, let's go shoot ourselves; yet, somebody had to do it.

1918 - The Royal Air Force was established in Britain with the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).
Debating this one would take too much space and, certainly, is not in league with the other events listed herein -- basically, what was the logical necessity?

1920 - Germany's Workers Party changed its name to the Nationalist Socialist German Worker's Party (Nazis).
Most now know they had their swatstika backwards...

Associated with most of these was a sprinkling of what we term 'civil war'. Looks like we've changed over the years is our shorts. You'll have to fill me in on Slobo -- is he related to Bobo or Bello?
:P

Which continued until around the summer soltice. To the surprise of the U.S. Marines, there was no opposition to their April Fool's landing.

It was a brilliant idea as it took control of the nations air power away from the "successful" forward thinking Army General's who'd just about won the Great War* - they were well known for their appreciation of new ideas, such as tanks and aerial bombing... Secondly it took aeroplanes away from Battleship-centric Admirals! Admittedly this did the RAF very few favours in the short term (Army and Navy didn't like the RAF, and polititians decided to run it o a shoe-string - nothing's changed there then!).

Note how it took the USAAF the best part of 30 years to then become the USAF and escape the shackles of the ground based commanders, and not without its problems.
