1958 - The National Advisory Council on Aeronautics was renamed; they intended to keep going when the air ran out.


742 - Charlemagne, King of the Franks (makes him sound like a big hot dog), first Holy Roman Emperor was born.

1805 - Hans Christian Andersen, Danish author, poet and storyteller was born.

1814 - Erastus B. Bigelow, founder of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was born

1834 - Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, French sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, was born.
