The Soviets began the blockade of Berlin that then turned into the 24 hour flight service.
Basically the Cold War took off.

The air service wasn't generally suggested first, though, tanks very much. ;)

Well, you did manage to include the proper event for June 24, 1948. I was intending a more localized reference but, I suppose, the whole universe is round about it.
