And still it boggles the mind how, with so many crap ups in the operation, that it was successful. Just goes to show how good these guys were.

ehm, sorry? the soldiers failed, it was a total disaster, poorly planned and executed, at least eight soldiers were killed, cyrus vance resigned. do people in usa really believe that the operation "eagle claw" was succesfull?

the hostages were released more than three months later by iran only because

1. Algeria offered talks between usa and iran
2. Carter was no more president
3. The usa released the capital of iran

in this case... ::)
the teheran embassy incident was 1979, also 26 years ago, also there were a lot of "crap ups", so its not too hard to confuse those two.

And dont worry, no drugs here!  ;)

Speaking of the Iran Hostage matter involving the Americans, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president, several ex-hostages were like "Whoa, that guy looks like one of the hostage takers!"  They voiced their opinions quite vocally, and there never was any denial issued by anyone that Ahmadinejad was one of the hostage takers.

Ahmad-Inejad is know to have been a member of a terrorist group which killed 2 kurd leaders in the 80s here in vienna. he didnt kill himself, he was more like a watchmen.
wouldnt surprise he also took part in the 79 embassy assault.

This is what Mark is referring to. 1980: SAS rescue ends Iran embassy siege

When i say crap up's by that I mean mainly the fact the whole thing was played out live on TV. The hostage takers only had to turn on a TV set to see what was about to happen. It was lucky they police officer in the room with the one hostage taker acted as he did by tackling him when he saw the SAS trooper at the window, so as not to give away his position. Yes when you take into account the guy whos rope got stuck over a burning window and him having to be cut down, and the fact that the hostages have come out and said several of the terrorists had given themselves up only to then be shot. Now my personal opinion on that will remain private. But it did also bring out the funny comment by maggie thatchers husband when they meet the squad after about failing because well nevermind:)

AFAIK He is a member of a special militia group, see it as the first line of defense for the ayathollas. these guys have sworn lifelong alegiance to the cause.

As the 1980 embassy guys were separatists, i dont think that Ahmedinajad had ANYTHING to do with them. Eventually this one would lead to the 1980s gulf war.

@Ozzy: most people outside the UK link the words 'embassy siege' and 'iran' to the 1979 event.

Being special forces you'd hope that they'd be faster than any police force. However, the UK police were on the scene long before the SAS were called upon.

One was taken hostage and remained armed throughout the siege............everyone knows that the British Bobby is never armed ;)
