Postby WebbPA » Sat May 06, 2006 7:08 am

On May 6, 1954, British runner Roger Bannister (now Sir Roger) broke the four-minute mile with a time of 3:59.4, a feat considered impossible at the time.

Within a year 32 other athletes had also accomplished the impossible.

The current record is 3:43.13, held by Hicham El Guerrouj.
