Now, now who left that llaying around?  :o Sounds a bit irresponsible - didn't anyone know about it when they planted it?

My guess is that after so many bombs, mines and landmines planted during World War II (or any war, for that matter) it's easy to forget one.

Things were done in a hurry in 1940. It seems though that they did know about them. It said they blew several up fifteen years ago. Obviously it's not doing any harm where it is now... :P

I was going to say! They were planted at most SE airfields at the start of the war. Can't see what the fuss is about. They certainly weren't found - they were never lost in the first place! :)

They found just the same thing at Shoreham when they were building the hard runway in the early 1970s. They also found a hydraulically controlled hidden gun emplacement in the middle of the airfield. They had simply been forgotten after the end of WWII. I'll bet there's a lot more like it all over the country.

PS. They also found an unexploded German bomb.

The Guam jungle is supposed to be off limits because much of the downed aircraft and unexploded bombs and rockets were left in there after WW2. Of course, the place is also overpopulated with wild boar so if someone should find a new crater with fresh strips of hot bacon, you'll know what happened. 8)

they find unexploded ordinance all the time over here, practically in any new developement, and sometimes even old basements.

Yeah, Nazi Germany gave Britain a big supply and got even more in return. Such a wonderful deal of profit sharing. :o
