I didn't know that women had ever been anything but nursing officers in WWI

Let alone had anything to do with planes in a service capacity!

I'm not surprised at women doing this sort of work at all but I don't think it's general knowledge that they served in the RFC. I've certainly not heard of it before.

That's good news. I've worked with that stuff for most of my life.
