You're on a roll!  I never heard of the R4D, but it was the Japanese L2D2, allied designation, 'Tabby'!  The plane most recognized as the Douglas DC3, or the military C47 Skytrain.

The KI-61 was loosely based on the ME109, but I think this isn't what you were looking for.

Maybe it is the Ki-61 because the Ki-201 never flew.

The KI-61 was loosely based on the ME109, but I think this isn't what you were looking for.

Very loosely based by the look of it. I don't who designed it (I could probably find out easily enough) but it looks more like a Heinkel to me.

Ki-61. One of the few (maybe even the only ) japanese design with an inline engine. Designed by a german.

The design is attributed to Takeo Doi, assisted by Shin Owada.  Both the Ki-60 and Ki-61 were designed around the licence built DB601A.  THe lighter Ki-61 came out the better design.

Ultimately, engine shortages led the basic design to be re-engined with the Mitsubishi Ha-112 radial engine and this resulted in an overall better fighter.
