October 4, 1957, the Launch of Sputnik 1
Posted: Tue Oct 04, 2005 5:16 pmOn this date in 1957 the Soviet Union successifully launched Sputnik 1 using a R-7 Rocket, the world's first artifical satelite. It would orbit Earth for 2 months sending out a beeping radio signal simply to display its presence. It reentered 1/3/1958.
