1966 Star Trek premieres

On this day in 1966, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise takes off on its mission to "boldly go where no man has gone before," with the premiere of Star Trek.

Now this is an interesting discussion topic  - Was Start Trek a visionary's idea of the future and what mankind could expect, or was it a collection of social statements reflecting the turbulent times (racism, sexual relations, cultural mores, etc) of the mid sixties, but SET in the "future" ?

I would suggest that the first Trek was both a vision of hope for the future and a social commentary on just how far that trip would be.

Let This Be Your Final Battleground is one of the finest commentaries on the stupidity of racism that I've ever seen.

I will make a prediction...

This time next year Star Trek will be on TV, not just a "40 Years" special, but a regular series.

I still rate it as the only one of the series worth watching! The new ones are just pants. But I tend to view them all as some kind of social commentary, but the films were just a quest for more cash
