1944 - Hitler survived an assasination attempt.
1952 - Emil Zatopek won the first of his 3 golds at the Olympics in 10000m he would in the following week also win the 5000m and the marathon (which he'd never run before and would set a new Olympic record doing it!!!). A truely great Olympian.
1960 -  Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the worlds first woman Prime Minister, she was PM of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)
1974 - Turkey invaded Cyprus, the island is still divided.
