As for the media, last year was the 60th anniversary, and there was a shedload of coverage then. The fact is that the 6th of june 1944 isn't news any more which is why it's not mentioned inless there is some important event such as last years anniversary.

Posted: Mon Jun 06, 2005 6:21 pmAye. Whenever theres a special history moment, the guy who does the morning announcements (History teacher) always makes a note of it. I try and listen, but the other kids in my homeroom couldn't give a crap. Maybe they should all force them to learn German. :-/ (No offence, German guys)

In Canada it's officially the "Year of the Veteran"...which means that public officials all make the right noises about greater respect for veterans, but don't actually do much constructively.
On the up side, one of the national newspapers did a full page story about Canada's involvment in D-Day. They highlited all the units involved and the beach sectors they landed on.
Sad, there were more Canadian troops in reserve for Juno beach than the Canadian Armed Forces could muster today.

Posted: Tue Jun 07, 2005 4:09 pmOn the morning of the 6th of June, the BBC was more concerned with reporting that HRH Prince Harry was being allowed to wear trainers at Sandhurst. What they didn't seem to appreciate is that this would've been on the advice of the Physios, and would only be a temporary measure, just as it would be to the other 80% of the cadets who will be allowed to for some period of his course...
