I was just reading about this in the paper, the war to end all wars kind of failed in that objective... What a waste of human life :(

I heard the other day that the furthest part of advance on the western front by the Allied forces at the end of WWI was only about 30 yards infront of the spot where the first skirmish took place. So in terms of human life, it's probably about 100,000 lives for each yard gained.

A senseless waste, but at the same time the biggest revolution in warfare since the discovery of gunpowder. Just think, If WWI hadn't happened then when would all the new technology (machine guns, aircraft, gas and dreadnaughts) have been tested against each other? WWI was the first modern war. While the soldiers were using rifles, machineguns and trench mortars their generals were used to using cavalry and cannon. This ment for a pretty steep learning curve in terms for tactics. Sure climbing out of a trench and walking towards the enemy would work. But only if your opponent was armed with little worse that spears and muskets which is how the technology had been tested before. The generals on both sides needed to learn how to use their new modern armies, and so the losses mounted.

If you really think though that WWI was a catasrophic waste of life, just think of the destruction that would have been if the experimentation was carried out with WWII technology.
