Mt. St. Helens

Postby tsunami_KNUW » Tue May 18, 2004 8:59 pm

Allright, today is the 24th anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens. For those of you who haven't heard about it go here  ;D http://www.historychannel.com/tdih/tdih ... =leadstory

Living in Washington State myself I have never seen it, though I have always wanted to. I think I may of seen it while flying home (real life) from Philadelphia but it could of been of the many other mountains up here  ::)

tsunami,
You should take a drive up there.  Its kind of an all day trip, but there are vista points along the way that allow different views of Mount St. Helens and have photos of how the area looked before the eruption.  Much of the area is recovering but there are still alot of fallen, burnt trees laying around.  There is a large observation station near the top, much like a museum to valcanos, with displays and graphics on the dynamics of valcanos along with a good view of the Mount.  One thing, it cost to enter this vista.  I don't remember the cost, its been a couple of years since I was up there last.  When the weathers good (summer) the park service allows foot treks up to the rim of the valcano.

As for flying over the Mount, back in 1994, on a trip to California, I flew over the mountian range and could see Mount St. Helens, its crater and how the flow had traveled very clearly..........it was awesome!!!

Was it really that long ago? I know time flies but I can hardly believe it. :o

I remember this well as although I was nowhere near the eruption it affected me. Despite being 1,000s of miles away it changed the weather patterns in my part of the world for several years aftewards. A natural event like this can be far more serious than anything us humans can do. IMHO

i've seen that one on tv and in the projection dome at Dwingeloo.
especialy the dome one made you airsick, as it was filmed from a helicopter that was flying as close to the ash cloud as the pilot dared

.....whenever I fly from SEA to SFO my flight plan always takes me right over it as well as Crater Lake in Oregon.

Crater Lake from the air is quite a sight too!  I've seen it a couple of times when flying down to California.

Getting back to Mount St. Helens, I remember seeing a set of photographs taken from a weather satellite at the time of the eruption.  The blast literally blew a whole in the sky, parting the clouds above the mountain.
