Does anyone know if the ship the Great Eastern made it to service?

Yesterday i saw a doc. about a great British engineer who developped it, but he died before her maiden voyage. It seemed to be a huge ship, meant to steam from England to Australia and back, without refuelling or should i say recoalling?  ;)

They had a hard time to get her in the water, but the story didn't reveal what happend to her. Did she ever go to the land down under?

No,she never was put into service,but she served a few years as a cable layer across the Atlantic.

She was put into service. With Jules Verne being one of the first passengers. However, there was no call for such a big ship and she was quickly retired to being a cable layer and finally a big billboard on the Mersy.

Still wonderfull to see they could build such large vessels in that time.
