So why do they call it a "Luger"?

Quite simple really. They don't.

The Walther P38 and the Parabellum P'08 (aka Luger) were two very different guns.

Well, shows how much I know about guns...  Better stick to aircraft.

So...  Why do they call that gun a Luger?

Dunno. Probably because Luger is easier to say that Parabellum P'08.

It should be noted though that the P38 was an intended replacement for the Luger.

Basically, the Parabellum P.08 is also called a Luger because it was developed by  Georg Luger.

Being naturally curious I typed gun in Dictionary.com. This is the first entry.

Actually, I was thinking about that.  What makes a gun, cannon, pistol, artillery piece, mortar peice, machine gun, sub machine gun different from each other?  Some pairs seem to be the same!  (Tank/Anti-Tank)

Sidearm:  Can either be a rifle, pistol, revolver or shotgun but a weapon that can be carried by a person.

Pistol: is magazine fed and usually the magazine slides into the handle of the weapon.

Revolver: the cartridges are placed unless you use a speed loader into a revolving cylinder which flips shut.
Most revolvers hold six rounds.

Pistols, Revolvers, and Rifles are usually equipped with a grooved barrel (or rifled barrel) depending on whom you talk to.

Shotguns are usually smooth bore (no spiral grooves or rifling) inside the barrel.

There are many weapons used by special force units that operate in many different ways and I am not privy to that information.

I sometimes carry a licenced revolver and a licenced rifle when I fly depending where I am going.  I try to shoot twice a month at our rod and gun club.

The above terms were what I was taught when I was in the Air Force many years ago and they are the terms taught at most civilian training facilities to-day.  At least they were as of yesterday .  I can not speak for the military as I have been discharged to many years.

I do believe there are Boats in the Navy.

I was told Ships carry Boats.  I take it they are referring to lifeboats.

Thanks to the Titanic All Commercial Ships must carry lifeboats.

This is a good point. The RN used Motor Torpedo Boats (MTBs) during WWII. I believe that JFK served in something simliar in the US Navy known as a PT Boat. I'm sure that light craft are used by most services these days. I assume these are also called boats.
