Norway - The evacuation of British and French troops (24,000 men) from Narvik and Harstad is completed. A Norwegian delegation negotiates with the Germans for a peace treaty. The British aircraft carrier Glorious is sunk by the German heavy battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, Southwest of Narvik.
1942
Poland - Fifteen Poles, including 12 women are publicly hanged in Posen. The bodies left hanging for 48 hours as a warning.
1943
Poland - Auschwitz; Jewish Dr. Albert Menasche arrives from Greece. He joins the camp orchestra. They would play as new arrivals entered the camp. He is the only one of a family of more than thirty to survive. United States - Statement Warning the Axis Against Using Poison Gas is issued.
1944
Italy - The U.S. Fifth Army continues its drive North in Italy, taking Civita Castellana.
1945
Germany - SHAEF reveal the details of the German plans to exterminate all Jews in Europe by the summer 1946. Pacific - TF 38 (Vice Admiral John S. McCain) planes attack Kanoya Airfield, Kyushu, Japan.
