Ford - or Packard?

Were the Merlins sub-contracted to other engine manufacturers?

But then, was Ford (UK) involved in the manufacture of Merlins?

Ford (UK) in Manchester I believe. It was sometime early in the war, and RR were unable to keep up with demand for Merlins, so went to Ford and a. n. other complany (Rover?) to agree manufacture by those companies. They went to Ford saying how they would need to be made to superior tolerances than motor cars, only for Ford to turn round and laugh at how slack they were! ;D
